Crossing (2009) was filmed and photographed on a ferryboat between Finland and Sweden. In the pictures, I have attempted to convey the elements of this memory by returning to the scene of the crime. The images draw out and reveal the latent sense of horror and menace that I associate with the location, and yet remain as clinically sterile and disassociated as possible. This is necessary so that a sense of distance and ambiguity can be maintained whilst viewing the work. The sense of drama evoked is likewise a reference to the effects horror films use to heighten the sense of anxiety – the fact you know that something is there, but you can’t quite see it. The viewer is not given the full story, only the information necessary to suggest that something might have happened there.
